Police are appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was approached and threatened by a man in Burgess Hill on Thursday morning (16 October).

The incident happened at around 8.10am in an alleyway off Maple Drive, close to the junction with Packham Way, as the girl was walking to school.

She was approached by a man not known to her, who made threats before she managed to run away.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is now being supported by specially trained officers.

Police step up patrols in area

Detective Chief Inspector Pauline Lane said:

“This was a distressing incident for the victim on her way to school, which we are taking very seriously.

“We are urging anyone who saw something suspicious in the area to come forward.

“This includes anyone in the area with relevant CCTV, doorbell, dashcam or mobile phone footage.

“Officers are investigating and will be at the scene as we carry out enquiries, and there will be increased patrols to provide reassurance.”

The suspect is described as white, slim, in his mid-20s, with blue eyes and stubble. He was wearing a black leather jacket over a white hooded top, and blue jeans.

Police say an increased presence will remain in the area as investigations continue.

Witness appeal

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant footage, is urged to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting serial 343 of 16/10.
