Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault that occurred in Worthing town centre earlier this month.

The incident took place between 5pm and 5.30pm on Saturday, July 12, in Liverpool Gardens, just outside the entrance to McDonald’s. According to Sussex Police, a 62-year-old local man was struck by another man in what is being treated as a serious assault.

The victim sustained a serious injury during the altercation but did not seek hospital treatment at the time. Officers responded swiftly, and a 63-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. He has since been released on bail while detectives continue their investigation.

Detective Constable Dan Waterson, who is leading the inquiry, said: “This was a serious assault that took place in a busy town centre outside the entrance to McDonald’s in the late afternoon.

The incident left the victim shaken, and a suspect was arrested soon afterwards.

We continue to appeal for witnesses, information, and any footage from those who have not already come forward.”

The assault occurred in a well-trafficked area and at a time when many people would have been out and about, prompting hopes that further witnesses or video evidence might help progress the case.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sussex Police online or by calling 101, quoting serial 1247 of 12/07. Anonymous reports can also be made to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
