A teenager has been jailed for more than three years after the manslaughter of a family man in Littlehampton.

Paul Lawrence, 51, died following an assault in Gladonian Road in the early hours of 28 January 2024. Emergency services were called, but Mr Lawrence later died from his injuries.

A 17-year-old boy from Bognor Regis appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday 6 October, where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was released on bail with strict conditions ahead of sentencing.

The defendant returned to the same court on Friday 12 December, where he was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. He cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age.

A second 17-year-old boy, from Littlehampton, was previously convicted in connection with the incident. He pleaded guilty to sending a grossly offensive or menacing message, contrary to section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, and to possession of cannabis. He is also unable to be identified.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell praised the victim’s family for their resilience throughout the investigation.

“Paul’s family have shown tremendous strength and courage during this extremely difficult time, and I’d like to thank them for their support and understanding,” he said.

“While nothing can change what happened that day, I hope the conclusion of this case brings them some sense of closure. Our thoughts remain with them.”
