A GoFundMe appeal has been launched to support a Worthing family left with nothing following a devastating house fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Emergency services were called to a home in Abbingdon Walk, Worthing, at around 4.20am on January 1, after reports of a serious blaze.

Sussex Police confirmed that five people were injured in the fire and taken to hospital for treatment. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters rescued a woman in her 50s from the property and provided immediate first aid before paramedics took over her care.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene as crews battled the blaze. Police and the fire service are jointly investigating the cause of the fire, which is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

The fire has left Lynn, Steve and their three children facing an unimaginable situation. The family has lost their home and all of their possessions, while also coping with serious injuries and ongoing hospital treatment.

The family is currently split across several specialist hospitals, including Bristol, East Grinstead and Brighton, with Steve travelling between locations from Worthing to support his partner and children.

A spokesperson for the GoFundMe appeal said the family is facing “an unimaginable period of grief alongside the immediate practical reality of having absolutely nothing left.”

The fundraiser has been created to help cover emergency accommodation, clothing and essential items, as well as time away from work and other unexpected costs arising in the months ahead.

“The most important thing at the moment is getting through each day without the added pressure of finances,” the appeal states. “Any contribution, no matter how small, will go a long way and be greatly appreciated.”

Emergency services have praised the swift response of crews at the scene, while the local community has begun rallying around the family as they start the long road to recovery.
