Sussex Police Appeal for Witnesses in Hassocks Hit-and-Run Fatality

A tragic event unfolded near the village of Hassocks in the early hours of Thursday, May 18, when local man Tony Barrow, 64, was found deceased on Clayton Hill off the A273. Sussex Police are now seeking the public’s assistance in their ongoing investigation of this fatal incident.

Emergency services were initially called to the scene over concerns for the welfare of Mr. Barrow. However, upon arrival, he was tragically pronounced dead. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death has since revealed that Barrow was the victim of a hit-and-run accident, with the vehicle involved failing to stop at the scene.

Sussex Police are now urgently appealing to any motorists who were in the area at the time, particularly between 00.15am and 00.40am, to come forward. They are especially interested in any individuals who may have witnessed other vehicles on the road or have dashcam footage that could help in identifying the hit-and-run vehicle.

In connection with the incident, a 59-year-old man from Hove has been arrested and subsequently released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any relevant information is urged to contact Sussex Police by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting Operation Bicester.
