Alleged assault occurred while officer was on duty.

A Sussex Police officer, Sergeant Matthew Crane, 47, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by touching, following an investigation. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charges, which involve a woman known to him.

The alleged incidents occurred on 19 September 2023 while Sergeant Crane was on duty. In light of these charges, he has been suspended from duty and is scheduled to appear at Staines Magistrates’ Court on 21 June.

The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which directed a local investigation by the Professional Standards Department.
