Undercliff Walk Closures for Rock Scaling Operations

This week marks the commencement of safety works at the Undercliff Walk, focusing on the removal of unstable rocks and debris. This initiative, involving expert contractors skilled in abseiling, extends the efforts initially started in Saltdean during spring.

These specialists will be employing hand scaling techniques to meticulously clear loose materials from the cliffside. Scheduled to start from Monday, 13 November, the project is expected to span approximately six weeks, weather permitting.

The necessary closure of sections of the Undercliff Walk, particularly between the Roedean and Rottingdean ramps, will be implemented for safety. Although diversions will be established, access to local amenities like chalets and the Ovingdean Beach Café will be maintained.

This preventive measure is essential due to the natural erosion processes affecting the cliffs, exacerbated by harsh weather conditions like wind, rain, and cold. Such interventions not only ensure public safety by averting potential larger cliff falls but also aid in preserving the cliff’s structure by maintaining the slope’s angle, thereby slowing erosion.

The urgency of this work was highlighted earlier this year, especially in January, when significant rockfalls were observed on the path, underscoring the cliffs’ vulnerability to severe weather.
