Burglar Arrested Inside Elderly Woman’s Home in Lewes

Lewes police apprehended a suspect in the early hours of Wednesday, May 10. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Anthony Jones from High Street, Lewes, was found inside the home of an elderly woman on The Course.

The incident was reported by an alert member of the public who noticed a man trying to break into homes and called 999 at 12:15 a.m. By 12:24 a.m., officers were on the scene and had surrounded the targeted house.

Jones was subsequently charged with burglary in connection to this incident, along with an additional charge of burglary and two counts of fraud relating to a separate incident. He has been remanded in custody.

The elderly woman, who was home at the time of the intrusion, was unharmed. Neighborhood policing officers will be providing her with support in the aftermath of the event.

Chief Inspector Di Lewis lauded the prompt action of the officers and the observant citizen who reported the crime. “This was great work by our officers, responding rapidly to an emergency call, getting a suspect in custody and protecting a vulnerable woman in under ten minutes,” she said.

She also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities, reminding them that they can do so online, via 101, or by dialling 999 in an emergency.
