“The List of Charges Against Southern Water Keeps Growing,” Says Lewes District Council’s New Water Champion
In a unanimous decision, Cabinet councillors at Lewes District Council have approved the appointment of a Water Champion to oversee Southern Water and South East Water, promising increased accountability for both companies.
Councillor Emily O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Climate, Nature, and Food Systems, has taken on the role of Water Champion and will diligently assess the performance of these utility providers, subsequently presenting her findings to the Full Council.
Councillor O’Brien expressed her determination, stating:
“Like the majority of residents in Lewes district and throughout the southeast, I’ve been deeply troubled by the actions of Southern Water and South East Water in recent years.
“The litany of allegations against Southern Water continues to expand, especially following the recent BBC exposé on illegal sewage discharge.
“Our rivers and coastal waters face unprecedented threats, and in this capacity, I am committed to uncovering any misconduct by either company.”
It’s worth noting that Lewes District Council declared a water emergency in July 2023.
