Off-Duty Incident Leads to Multiple Charges for Sussex Constable

Professional Standards Department to review Sussex officer's conduct post criminal trial

A Sussex Police constable, Dale Hughes, is set to face court charges, including assault, following an incident in Worthing.

At 29 years old, Hughes is facing allegations of two assaults on civilians, as well as charges of being drunk and disorderly, and harassment. These charges stem from an event that occurred on December 2, 2023, while he was off duty.

Currently suspended from his role, Hughes is scheduled for a court appearance at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on March 26.

The case was brought to the attention of the Independent Office of Police Conduct, which recommended a local investigation by the force’s Professional Standards Department.

Following the outcome of the criminal case, Sussex Police intends to undertake misconduct proceedings to address Hughes’s actions.
