Child Rescued After Inflatable Toy Drifts Off East Beach Selsey

In a dramatic rescue operation, the Selsey Coastguard team responded to an emergency call at 14:33 27th of May, reporting a child being blown out to sea on an inflatable toy off East Beach, Selsey. The Selsey Inshore Lifeboat was also dispatched to the scene.

Thanks to the quick actions of a local fisherman and the Lifeboat team, the young girl and a man were successfully rescued and brought back to shore unharmed. Once safely ashore, safety advice was given, and no medical assistance was required.

The Coastguard emphasised the dangers of using inflatable toys and airbeds in the sea, which are designed for pools and can easily be blown offshore. They provided the following safety tips for those using such items at the beach:

  • Ensure children are closely supervised.
  • Stay nearby.
  • Only use between red and yellow flags.
  • Follow the lifeguards’ advice.
  • Avoid taking inflatables out in big waves.
  • Do not use when the orange windsock is flying, indicating offshore winds.

In case of an emergency at sea, on the beach, or along the coast, the public is urged to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
