Stolen 18th Century Clock Returns to Brighton

A stolen clock from the 1760s, valued for its unique maritime motifs, has been safely returned to its home in Brighton.

A cherished antique clock, stolen from Preston Manor in Brighton over twenty years ago, has been returned to its rightful home. The musical clock, popular among visitors, especially children, features sailing ships that move to music every hour when it chimes.

The historical piece was stolen on February 12, 2001, by two men who were seen fleeing in a nearby vehicle. Despite extensive efforts by Sussex Police, the thieves were never apprehended. However, the saga took a positive turn this year when the Rural Crime Team recovered the clock at an auction house, thanks to a tip-off from the Art Loss Register—a platform used for monitoring stolen art and antiques.

Sergeant Tom Carter of the Rural Crime Team explained, “After being alerted by the museum, I was able to secure the clock before it could be sold. Interestingly, this same auction house unknowingly sold the clock to a collector two decades ago, who then relisted it for sale last year.”

The clock, a rare Thomas Hunter Jr Bracket model from the 18th century (circa 1760-70), adorned with exquisite maritime motifs, was likely acquired by the Stanford family due to its sea-themed decorations. It has been a part of Preston Manor’s collection since at least 1905 and was officially handed over to the Brighton Corporation along with the manor in 1932.

“We are thrilled to have this wonderful piece back,” said Hedley Swain, CEO of Brighton & Hove Museums. “It’s not just a beautiful item, but it also holds significant historical importance to Brighton’s municipal history and the heritage of the Brighton & Hove Museums.”

The museum is now working on restoring the clock to full working order, planning to put it back on display at Preston Manor, continuing its tradition of delighting visitors with its hourly musical chime.
