ASLEF, the prominent union representing train drivers, has made the decision to implement an overtime ban across 16 companies from 3rd to 8th July. The union’s action is a direct response to the protracted national dispute surrounding fair compensation.
Effective from 00:01 on Monday, 3rd July, until 23:59 on Saturday, 8th July, train drivers belonging to Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, Chiltern, East Midlands Railway, Greater Anglia, Great Western Railway, Great Northern, LNER, Northern, Southeastern, Southern (inclusive of Gatwick Express), South Western Railway (inclusive of Island Line), Thameslink, Transpennine Express, and West Midlands Trains will refuse to engage in non-contractual overtime.
This measure is not a full strike but rather a strategic step, taken following a series of decisive ballots among ASLEF members, in an effort to address the ongoing national dispute over equitable wages.
Mick Whelan, the General Secretary of ASLEF, expressed the necessity of this action, stating: “Regrettably, we find ourselves left with no choice but to take this step. We have consistently approached the negotiating table in good faith, seeking a resolution to the dispute. Unfortunately, it is evident that both the train operating companies and the government are not committed to ending this conflict. Their actions suggest a desire to perpetuate industrial unrest and undermine our industry.”
Whelan further emphasized, “We are mindful of the inconvenience this may cause to the public. However, our primary objective is to ensure that our members are fairly compensated during this challenging period of soaring living costs, with inflation exceeding 10%. Additionally, we strive to safeguard our members’ terms and conditions of employment.”
ASLEF urges the government and the companies involved to reassess their positions and actively seek a resolution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.
The Train Operating Companies are currently looking at which services will be impacted and plan to have more information very soon.
