Warning issued over Cockle picking in Shoreham

Adur and Worthing Police

On Friday 17th June, our officers received a call regarding bait digging / cockle picking around the mud flats in Shoreham. This area is the site of specific scientific interest (SSSI) and should not be disturbed, it’s also illegal.

Some men were spoken to who they said they weren’t aware and were given a map which explained it better.

Also, it’s worth remembering that shellfish gathered from some areas are likely to be unfit for human consumption due to high levels of contaminants in the water such as the bacterium E.coli, leading to possible serious illness if consumed and that they’re not classified under food safety regulations to permit the harvesting of shellfish and it is an offence to remove any shellfish for the purpose of commercial supply or sale.

If you witness anyone cockle picking on the river Adur, please report it to the Public Health & Regulation office at Adur & Worthing Council
