BTP & GTR work together to tackle key safety issues & improve passenger confidence on the railways

GTR and British Transport Police (BTP) have signed a ‘declaration of collaboration’ to improve colleague and passenger confidence and tackle key safety issues such as anti-social behaviour.

The policing partnership is the first of its kind for a train operating company and outlines how both organisations can work more effectively together.

The plan is based on the BTP’s Policing Plan for 2022-23 and GTR’s ambition for safety and security. The Declaration confirms four objectives that will be priorities for this year:

1. The deterrence of unwanted sexual behaviour on our network
2. Identification and protection of vulnerable people and groups on our services
3. To positively impact staff assault prevention and prosecution
4. To improve colleague and passenger confidence through increased engagement.

The declaration was signed by Chief Superintendent, Martin Fry, on behalf of the BTP and Tom Moran, Managing Director TLGN on behalf of GTR.

Chief Superintendent, Martin Fry said: “This declaration is a really positive step forward in continuing to make the railway safer for all our communities. The collaboration will deliver more meaningful objectives which will be jointly performance measured to reduce crime and increase confidence and security for everyone travelling by rail”.

Tom Moran, Managing Director TLGN, said: “I am delighted we have become the first train operating company to sign a declaration of collaboration with the BTP. This is a foundation for even close partnership working between our organisations. We will hold each other to account and work together – at all levels of our organisations – to keep our customers and colleagues as safe and secure as possible.
