Missing 12 year-old sparks major Search off Saltdean

Emergency services were scrambled to Saltdean after the coastguard received a 999 call to reports of a 12 year old that had not returned to shore on Saltdean beach.

The coastguard tasked Newhaven / Birling Gap Coastguard teams, Brighton Lifeboat, two search and rescue Coastguard Helicopters 163 and 175 and Sussex police to the area.

Once on scene the Coastguard and lifeboat conducted an extensive shoreline search whilst further investigations were made.

Coastguard Helicopter 163 from Lydd arrived on scene and carried out a search from the air between Telscombe Cliffs and Rottingdean.

After further investigations by coastguards and Sussex Police, it was established that the casualty was witnessed returning to shore and all assets were stood down.

Coastguard Helicopter 175 was just entering the area and was stood down just off Brighton

The coastguard said “It was a False alarm with good intentions.”
