Royal Sovereign Lighthouse’s first phase of deconstruction completed

In a historic and meticulously executed operation, stage one of the deconstruction of the iconic Royal Sovereign Lighthouse reached a significant milestone on Sunday, October 1, 2023. The operation, overseen by Trinity House observers, marks the beginning of the end for the beloved maritime beacon.

Marine contractors Herbosch-Kier were entrusted with the critical task of removing the topsides of the Royal Sovereign Lighthouse. The operation commenced promptly at 0900 local time, as the topsides were carefully detached from the towering structure. A sense of anticipation hung in the air as onlookers and maritime enthusiasts observed the operation, knowing that it marked the start of a new chapter for the historic lighthouse.

With precision and expertise, Herbosch-Kier’s team successfully lifted the topsides clear of the lighthouse tower. This delicate procedure was executed with utmost care to ensure the safety of both the structure and the environment. Once removed, the topsides were gently lowered onto a waiting barge, ready to be towed away.

Stage one of the Royal Sovereign Lighthouse’s deconstruction has been completed with remarkable finesse, setting the stage for the next phase of this endeavor. The looming pillar, which has stood as a sentinel for generations of sailors, is slated for removal next year, marking the final chapter in the lighthouse’s storied history.
