Preston Park Memorial to Jewish Refugees Damaged

Sussex Police are seeking public assistance following an act of vandalism to a memorial tree in Preston Park, Brighton. This incident, occurring overnight between November 4 and 5, involved a vehicle deliberately damaging a tree dedicated to Jewish refugees who fled Austria during the early stages of World War II.

The tree, situated on the eastern side of the park, also had its accompanying memorial plaque from the Association of Jewish Refugees damaged.

In light of the ongoing conflicts in Israel and Gaza, which have raised global and local concerns, Sussex Police are offering their support to those affected in the Sussex community. The force is increasing its visibility in various parts of Sussex to reassure local residents and is actively engaging with communities and partners to mitigate potential tensions.

The police urge anyone experiencing threatening behavior or concerns for their safety to reach out for help. They assure that all reported offences will be thoroughly investigated, taking all relevant factors into consideration.

Anyone with information about this incident, especially details or footage of vehicles in the area during the time of the vandalism, is asked to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, referencing serial 714 of 14/11.
