Major disruptions on Southern rail after van plows into Barnham store

Railway staff at the Barnham train depot were evacuated early this morning when a Transit van crashed into the adjacent Co-op store. The dramatic incident led to considerable disruption, with Southern Rail being forced to cancel numerous train services to and from the station.

A telehandler is presently propping up the front of the shop to prevent further structural damage, while the van involved in the incident has been recovered and towed away.

In a statement released by Southern Rail, the company said: “The police dealing with an incident near the railway at Barnham is causing disruption to journeys through the station. Services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. We anticipate disruption will continue until 12:00.”

As police continue their investigation, it remains unclear how the Transit van came to crash into the Co-op store. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but the area remains cordoned off as a safety precaution.
