Police and BDMLR Save Stranded Seal Pups

Demonstrating teamwork and dedication, Hastings police join forces with BDMLR to aid vulnerable seal pups.

In a heartwarming display of teamwork and compassion, Hastings police, along with volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), came to the rescue of two young seal pups found stranded on Hastings Beach, East Sussex, on Tuesday evening. Responding to a call, officers arrived at the scene to find the marine animals in distress, prompting an immediate and carefully coordinated rescue operation.

The presence of the seals on the beach drew the attention of concerned onlookers, prompting police and rescue workers to secure the area swiftly. This measure was taken to ensure the safety of both the public and the seals, minimising additional stress to the already vulnerable animals.

Laura and Katie, dedicated volunteers from BDMLR, played a crucial role in the rescue. Their expertise in marine wildlife was instrumental in safely transporting the seal pups into a crate, ready for their journey to the Mallydams Wood Wildlife Centre, where they will receive the necessary care and rehabilitation before hopefully being released back into the wild.

The police and BDMLR have issued a statement urging the public to exercise caution and maintain a respectful distance if they encounter seals or other marine mammals in distress. Interference can exacerbate the animals’ condition, potentially leading to further complications. The BDMLR emphasises the importance of their 24-hour rescue hotline (01825 765546), encouraging anyone who spots marine wildlife in distress to call for immediate assistance.
