Body recovered from the sea after being spotted by a passing ferry

Sunday the 8th of January 2023 Brittany Ferry Cotentin alerted the Coastguard after spotting a body in the sea at around 4.30 pm close to the main shipping channel 10NM south East of Bembridge on the Isle of White / 14.5 NM South West of Selsey In Sussex.

The Coastguard paged Bembridge Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat the Alfred Albert Williams and the Coastguard helicopter 175 from Solent at 4:47 pm with instructions to carry out a search of the area reported for the possible casualty.

A spokesperson for Bembridge lifeboat said “Although the winds had abated (Chimet was showing F4 SW), there was still a 3m swell so it took the Alfred Albert Williams about 45 minutes to reach the search area.”

“At around 6:20 pm Coastguard Helicotpor 175 located the casualty and Bembridge lifeboat were then tasked to recover the casualty and return to Bembridge where they were met by the Police.”

The lifeboat was recovered at 7:45pm
