Information Sought in Sussex Rape Investigation

Sussex Police release image of Gibbs, seeking information on rape and other charges

Sussex Police are urgently requesting public assistance as they delve into serious accusations of rape and sexual offenses involving women and children in the region. A critical investigation unfolded following a distressing report on December 28, where a woman alleged she was raped in a hotel room on September 26, 2023.

Shane Gibbs, 34, known to some as ‘Blue’ and with no permanent residence, faces serious charges after being apprehended on suspicions of rape. As detectives expanded their investigation, they uncovered additional claims against Gibbs, involving various victims who were acquainted with him.

Currently held in custody, Gibbs faces multiple charges, including one count of rape, two counts of child abduction, intentional strangulation, three counts related to sexual activities with minors, assault, and drug possession with intent to supply both class A and class B substances. His recent appearance at Hove Crown Court added two more rape charges to his record.

With his trial scheduled for October 7, Sussex Police are disseminating Gibbs’ image, urging individuals who may recognize him or have relevant information to step forward. Given Gibbs’ tendency to use aliases or remain incognito, recognizing him visually could be key for potential witnesses.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contribute to this crucial investigation, as Sussex Police aim to provide justice for the victims and ensure community safety.

Detective Superintendent Ben Newman said: “This is a wide-ranging investigation and we believe there are people we have not yet heard from who have vital information.

“If you have any information that could help, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please contact us online or via 101, quoting Operation Newbarn or serial 655 of 07/01.”
