Police release images from brutal assault that lead to pub losing its licence

Today, the police have released new images in an attempt to identify three individuals involved in a brutal assault at a pub in central Brighton.

The 51-year-old victim suffered a serious head injury after being attacked in The Black Horse on Church Street near the Brighton Dome around 11.50pm on Thursday, 12 January.

A police spokesperson commented: “Investigating officers believe the three men captured on CCTV may be able to assist with their enquiries.”

Following the assault, Brighton and Hove’s Licensing Panel reviewed the licence of The Black Horse, which led to a 28-day suspension.

Police applied for the review due to concerns that the pub was failing to meet its objectives to ensure public safety and prevent crime and disorder. Following the incident, police stated that the premises had failed to notify them about the serious assault.

Similar instances of serious disorder occurred on 28 December 2022, and high-level drug readings were recorded at the pub multiple times over the last 12 months.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Carr stated: “Licensed premises have a duty to ensure the safety of their customers and the wider public. Failure to adhere to these responsibilities will be taken extremely seriously by the police and our partners.

“We are committed to working with premises to help them meet their licensing objectives, but repeated failures will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly.”

If you recognise these individuals, or have any information that could help, contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 1517 of 12/01.”
