A new policy to restrict fast food advertising in Brighton & Hove is set to be implemented. The Strategy Finance and City Regeneration Committee, upon the agreement of council members, has decided to include limitations on the promotion of foods high in fat, sugar, and salt in their upcoming contract for city-wide bus and taxi shelter advertising.
Councillor Bella Sankey, the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council and chair of the committee, emphasised the evolving nature of advertising and the necessity of adapting regulations to prioritize public health. Sankey highlighted the established connection between junk food advertising and the increased consumption of unhealthy foods. The new restrictions are part of a broader initiative to combat obesity among both children and adults in the city.
The introduction of similar measures in other locations has shown positive outcomes without significantly affecting advertising revenue, as advertisers have adapted by diversifying their content to comply with the restrictions.
This policy change will not affect the existing contract, which will continue throughout the procurement process.
